What to DO

When a child turns 18, it can be like it was in the beginning. Child and adult systems are not the same. They don’t work the same way. There are so many things to take care of. Below are a few things to consider. Everything you need to do is not on the lists and everyone will not have to do everything on the lists.

Most of these services and programs are in different places. For example, social security is a federal program. SNAP is a state program. ABLE is a contracted program. 3 different agencies need to be contacted. Legal documents are approved and filed in the courts but copies need to be given providers. Different providers require different legal documents.

This looks like a lot because it is a lot. It is recommended that parents start planning for the adult system as early as middle school and as late as 6 months before high school graduation or 6 months before the child’s 18th birthday. It all depends on the needs of the child and the involvement of the family. We can help you figure it out.
